Chances are that you have seen them flying over Ambergris Caye, and if you were wondering what the “golf carts with wings” are, they are ultra-light planes. The ultra-light planes will not be used for commercial transportation and according to the investors; it will only be used for recreational flying.
The recreational flights will be another added adventure for local and visitors to San Pedro Town to enjoy a complete aerial view of La Isla Bonita. The ultra-light planes are just two of five that will be offering flyovers over San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and Lamanai in the Orange Walk District. Read more on the ultra-lights plane in the next issue of The San Pedro Sun Newspaper.

Acclaimed contemporary filmmaker, Ang Lee arrived in Ambergris Caye, Belize for a few days of sun and left a certified SCUBA diver. Lee took his certification course with White Sands Dive Instructor, Samuel Lin. Lee was accompanied by his two sons, Mason and Haan who also took the course and became certified divers as well.
Lee, who has directed movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, is working on his latest movie – Life of Pi. According to movie insiders, quite a bit of the film takes place underwater and it was for this reason that Lee decided to get certified. What better place to receive the course than Ambergris Caye.
After receiving his full certification, Lee along with PADI staff instructor for White Sands, Elbert Greer, visited Hol Chan Marine Reserve for a night dive. During this dive, Lee observed Bio-illuminant creatures in Belizean waters.
Born in 1954 in Pingtung, Taiwan, Ang Lee has become one of today’s greatest contemporary filmmakers. A graduate of the National Taiwan College of Arts and the University of Illinois and New York University, Lee began his career by serving as Assistant Director on Spike Lee’s student film, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads. After writing a couple screenplays, he eventually appeared in the film scene with Tui shou. He continued with his great work garnering Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Sense and Sensibility was his first Hollywood-mainstream movie. His career continued with works such as The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Chosen.
During his visit to Ambergris Caye, Lee stayed at Azul Resort and dined at Rojo Lounge, among others.

Forget the cold winds and spitting rain of Ballybunion and Bandon Dunes. Golfers who visit the Caribbean are willing to forsake a little history and tradition for a kinder and gentler climate. “Clients who consider the Caribbean are looking for an island golf experience,” said Matthew Diehl, marketing manager for Links Golf Travel [www.linksgolftravel.com]. “They want to play in the jungle, with views of the ocean and the mountains. They want to play along the coast, with palm trees swaying.”
Amongst aficionados of golf course design, the Caribbean has not traditionally been viewed as a standout destination. This, simply because the sun and surf that make the islands so appealing on so many levels is hell to pay on turf grass. The challenges of growing and maintaining first-rate playing surfaces have historically discouraged many top-shelf designers and developers from doing adventurous work in the Caribbean. But in the last ten years, this has changed, with the introduction of a new turf hybrid — Seashore Paspalum. “Agronomic advances are making golf more viable on the islands,” said Brian McCallen, acclaimed golf travel writer. “The new hybrids require less than half the pesticides of earlier grasses, are salt tolerant, and can even be irrigated with brackish water. They’re low maintenance, they’re very playable, and their fueling a boom in new, high quality courses.”
Among gorgeous golfing destinations, Caye Chapel [www.cayechapel.com] in Belize was chosen as one of the ten best.
Celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day November 12, 2009

November is here and the yellow, black and white flag is being waved across the country. It is the month that we celebrate the Garifuna culture and heritage as part of the Garifuna Settlement Day activities. Having settled in our country in 1832, the Garifuna have incorporated themselves beautifully in this, our melting pot of cultures. Not only have the incorporated themselves but through their beliefs and music, have transcended our country into a new level of cultural pride. Andy Palacio allowed the Garifuna beats to shine brightly and proudly worldwide and although his time was cut much too short, his legacy continues to live on, not only in his music but through the love of our country and his culture. His music evokes the culture we so proudly celebrate in this month of November.
November 19th marks the arrival of the Garifuna people to Dangriga. The Garifuna are a people produced from the merging of two cultures. The history goes that two slave ships were shipwrecked in the Caribbean near the island of St. Vincent. The slaves escaped the sinking boat and reached the shores of the island, where they were welcomed by the Caribs, who offered their protection. Their intermarriage formed the Garifuna people. The Garifuna adopted the Carib language but kept their African musical and religious traditions.
